Margot Meets Lynton Crosbie - Conservative Party General Election Campaign Director

Within a couple of weeks of his arrival from Australia to direct our election campaign Lynton asked to meet a selection of Conservative Candidates for the next election.  Margot attended a dinner given by Rachel Whetstone who runs Michael Howard’s office with fellow candidates Ed Vaizey and Michael Gove.

Lynton has a phenomenal track record of success in winning four elections for the Australian Liberal Party (equivalent to our Conservative Party).  His strategy is to be aggressive, poll voters regularly for their views and response to campaign messages and to focus on ‘swing voters’.

I discussed the principles of good communication and promotion with Lynton and was most encouraged by his expertise.  Communication should be well targeted and should address people’s concerns in a language with which they can identify.  I also agree with him on the importance of polling.  An advertising client once told me “you are born with two ears and one mouth, use them in those proportions.  Good advice for anyone in the communications business – especially politicians.
